| INTRODUCTION: |
| This is a guide for creating a barebones website,
with a web address with your own domain name, such as ‘www.firmname.com’,
and your own e-mail address, such ‘yourname@firmname.com’.
This assumes you have access to a computer and an internet service
provider that provides complimentary web space. This is typical of
most internet service providers. Unfortunately the internet address
for your web space often looks like ‘isp.net/users/yourname’. |
| |
| STEP
#1: |
The first step is to
register a domain name. We use Active
Domain for registering domain
names and they provide the complementary services necessary to turn
your ‘isp.net/users/yourname’ internet address into ‘firmname.com’ and
your e-mail address into such ‘yourname@firmname.com’.
There are likely other registrars providing similar services.
At Active Domain you will be able to search for available domain
names and register your choice for the current price of $9.95 per
year. It typically takes about
24 hours to receive a password allowing you to manage your new domain name.
Please be aware that it can also take a day or two for all of the
Domain Name Servers
on the internet, which quietly help web browsers and e-mail programs translate
your ‘firmname.com’ into an actual server address, which looks
like 123.234.345.456, at Active Domain. |
| |
| STEP
#2: |
The
second step after receiving your new password is to return to the
Active Domain website,
make the ‘Manage Domain’ selection and login. After successful
login, scroll to the ‘Host Setting’ section and enter the
settings shown in the following table. The first entry
redirects
visitors using ‘firmname.com’ to your web space at your internet
service provider. The second entry redirects visitors using ‘www.firmname.com’ to
your web space at your internet service provider.

The third step is to scroll
further down the domain management page and enter any number for new
e-mail addresses you would like to create, such as ‘yourname@firmname.com’ and
redirect then to existing e-mail addresses, such as ‘yourname@isp.net’.
After logging out of the domain management page, open your e-mail program
that services ‘yourname@isp.net’ change the Reply To setting
to ‘yourname@firmname.com’.

You are now finished. All
incoming e-mail for ‘yourname@firmname.com’ gets
automatically redirected to your current e-mail account and those responding
to your e-mail messages post replies to ‘yourname@firmname.com’ without
ever seeing ‘yourname@isp.net’.

PART
II:
AUTHORING WEB PAGES AND UPLOADING YOUR FILES |
TOP |
|
| |
| AUTHORING
WEB PAGES: |
Web pages are simple text files. There are many ways to author web pages, from
using text editors and word processing programs to programs solely dedicated
to generating
web
pages.
Many resources
are available on the internet and your internet service provide can provide
important
information about using your web space.
What is very import to note
here is that Active Domain utilizes a web page feature known as ‘frames’ to
deliver visitors to the web space provided by your internet service
provider such that
your domain name appears in the top location bar of the web browser
window. To maintain your domain name in the location bar in sucessive linked
pages, each link needs to be targeted to the original Active Domain
frame
by including
the phrase, added with a lowly text editor if need be, ‘target="_self"'.
Example:
Typical link: PORTFOLIO
URL Frames link: PORTFOLIO |
| |
| UPLOADING
FILES: |
| |
| Your internet
provider will have information on uploading files to your web space. |
