President's Message
The recession is ending, or it’s getting worse. A recent headline says that 1 in 150 in Monterey County are in bankruptcy. Foreclosures are everywhere. Unemployment is high, and our debt keeps growing. Unrest in countries around the globe is sprouting up, which could free oppressed peoples, or could bring in brutal regimes that may commit grievous crimes.
Yet the sun shines bright, the waves continue to break on the beach, the flowers bloom, and new life abounds all around us. New technology continues to open up seemingly endless improvements, both for humanity and for our environments. Solar technology is very nearly at the cost point where it is competitive with the burning of fossil fuels without government subsidies.
Architects are uniquely trained to use both sides of the brain, the analytical side and the creative side. As thought leaders we need to be engaged in our community, and to offer solutions to the numerous problems which surround us. More importantly, we need to help our society to not create new problems which can be easily avoided. We need to stop absurd thinking, and we need to get involved.
I am honored to serve as your President in 2012,
–Mike Wadsworth, AIA
