PRESIDENT'S NEWSLETTER
Rick Fedelem, AIA
2008 President
(also President in 1998)
It seems
appropriate that as we begin a new year we
define the goals that we should have as a
chapter for that year. These goals are actually
carrying over of the goals that the board had
established last year the refining of them to
establish a chapter that is a resource for its
members. Our three primary goals this year
are:
Communication:
Any successful organization needs to be able to
communicate with its members and have its
members communicate with the organization. It
is our intent this year that as event come up
special announcements need to be made that there
will be a distribution to the membership. This
will be done through the website, flash
bulletins, special mailings, emails & the eagle
flash.
Continuing
Education Credits: AIA members are required
to obtain eighteen CEC units per year. It is
our objective to provide opportunities to earn
most if not all of these units through the
monthly chapter and the special arts and
architecture programs that will be held
throughout the year. There will be other
opportunities that sponsors will be providing
and CEC units that will be forwarded to the
membership.
Public
Awareness: One of the advantages of becoming
apart an AIA member and part of the chapter is
that there is a recognition in the community of
AIA membership. We will be working toward
putting the public awareness display back in
circulation providing press releases for award
programs and in having community programs
through the art & architecture program in with
the Monterey Museum of Modern Art.
We would like to
establish an organization that encourages
participation of members not only in the
activities that are available but also in the
organization of the chapter and in helping on
committees and special project throughout the
year. These opportunities will be published in
the Flash as they present themselves.
If any of you have suggestions for activities
and programs or if there are issues that should
be addressed at a chapter level please contact
one of the board members so that it can be
discussed at a chapter level but also encourage
all of our members to support and participate in
the chapter as it supports our profession and
the work that we do.

SHADES
OF
GREEN
We
find that many building products and materials are being
touted as green. For those of you trying to use greener
building products and materials how do we differentiate
between all those “green” products and materials?
You can rate the
greenness of a product or material by using these 5
criteria:
-
How much
energy & pollution is expended in the manufacturing or
harvesting of the product/material?
-
How much
energy & pollution is expended in transporting the
product/material to the distribution warehouse and then
to the project site?
-
How much of a
health hazard is the product/material to install and/or
to live with?
-
How much
longevity & durability does the product/material have
during the lifetime of the building?
-
How much
energy & pollution is expended to break the
product/material down or to recycle them when they have
finished their useful life?
Most building
products meet at least one of these criteria but the
greenest products will meet most or all of these criteria.
As we architects need to
balance the project’s budget, product/material availability
and durability; we can evaluate each product/material item
against these 5 criteria and thus find the right balance of
green building product/materials for our projects.

Watch for our AIAMB 53
Drive By Architectural Guide
Coming Soon....
It has been almost five years since the AIAMB was challenged to create visions
for our communities by Congressman Sam Farr. Growing up on the
Peninsula, Farr’s perception of architects as the visionaries
of our built environment included such luminaries as Will
Shaw, Nathanial Owings, Fred Keeble and Bill Concolino.
