Newsletter:

2009 President
AIA
Monterey Bay Chapter has set goals to enhance the value of
membership for its members and the services they provide to clients.
The focus for the Chapter for 2009 will be to promote Public
Awareness of the Profession of Architecture; provide Continuing
Education for Architects and to encourage communication between our
Chapter members, sponsors and emerging professionals.
Public
Awareness
It
is important that the public understands the design and
technical
aspects of the Architectural Profession and what
the
advantages are of retaining a licensed AIA Architect.
AIA
Monterey Bay Chapter offers a unique opportunity for
its
member Architects to participate in a Public Awareness Display by
purchasing a board on which to display their work. The Public
Awareness Display will be rotated to different public locations
throughout the year. AIA MB is taking a lead in making the public
aware of the
ongoing role of the Architect in protecting the environment. This
has long been the role of responsible architecture.
However,
it has taken on new significance with new
products
and the current emphasis on “green” buildings
and
energy savings. AIA Architects have the expertise to
assist
clients with environmentally responsible architecture.
Continuing
Education
AIA
National, as a professional organization, requires its
members
to complete 18 Continuing Education Units per
year.
Continuing education is not required for an architectural license in
all states. However, the continuing education units are required for
all AIA members, adding additional value to their services.
In
2009 AIA MB will be offering a variety of programs at
our
4th Thursday monthly meetings. Programs will include
technical information on new materials and construction
methods; meetings with local agency representatives; legal issues
and contracts regarding the practice of architecture; and an ADA
presentation to meet state
requirements for learning units.
AIA
MB will continue with the popular Arts and Architecture
programs.
There will be 3-4 programs during the
year, usually on a Friday evening. These will also count for
Continuing
Education Units.
See the AIA MB
2009 calendar for dates and program information.
Communication
One
of the advantages of AIA MB as a professional organization is the
opportunity to interface with members,
other
professionals, sponsors and our emerging professionals.
It
is the opportunity to discuss industry issues,
mentor
our potential architects and be a community
voice
in support of the profession of architecture. Some
of
our members are working with the County of Monterey
and
City of Salinas to promote permit streamlining. Many
other
members sit on City and County boards and commissions.
In
2009 the AIA MB Board of Directors may have increasing opportunities
to be a voice in encouraging agencies to assist projects with
extended deadlines on approvals as a way to address the current
downturn in funding and
financing; we are in hopes of connecting with the Nanao Architects,
perhaps for the Sand Castle Contest; the Eagle
Flash will
continue to be a source of information for AIA MB members, our
sponsors and public agencies.
I
look forward to serving the Chapter by promoting the
goals
which were set forward two years ago and strengthening and
standardizing the functions of the Board. I would like to bring back
some Friday afternoon “Happy Hours” sponsored by different
offices during the year. It would provide an additional opportunity
to connect with member architects and associates to exchange ideas
and information…as well as being fun!!!
